Olababy vs. Cheap Amazon Silicone Sets: What Are You Actually Paying For?

Short answer: you're paying for verification, material purity, and design — the three things a product photo can't show you. A $9 silicone feeding set and a $20 one can look identical on screen. The differences live in what the silicone is made of, what testing (if any) the finished product went through, and whether anyone designed it around how babies actually eat. Here's how to tell them apart — including the checks you can do yourself, on any brand.

"Silicone" is not one material

Food-grade silicone is a spectrum, not a checkbox. Lower-cost silicone products often stretch the raw material with fillers, use cheaper pigments, or cure the silicone incompletely — shortcuts that are invisible in a product listing but show up in lab tests as volatile organic matter, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a known issue in low-grade rubber and silicone), or color that migrates into food.

Two quick checks you can run at home on any silicone product, ours included: the pinch test — stretch or twist the silicone hard; if white shows through at the stress point, the material contains fillers — and the smell test — fill it with boiling water; pure, fully-cured silicone shouldn't give off a chemical odor.

"BPA-free" on a listing is a claim, not a receipt

Anyone can type "BPA-free, food grade, non-toxic" into an Amazon listing. The question that separates brands is: tested by whom, against what standard, and will they show you?

Here's our answer to that question, specifically: our products are tested by independent third-party laboratories against both US standards (ASTM F963-17 toy safety, CPSIA Section 101 lead, Section 108 phthalates) and European standards (EC 1935/2004 food contact, EU 10/2011, EN 14350 for children's drinking equipment). BPA: not detected. All regulated phthalates: not detected. Lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, antimony: not detected. When you're evaluating any brand — again, including us — ask for this. A brand that pays for real testing will be eager to show you. Silence or a generic "all our products meet safety standards" is an answer too.

The tests you've never heard of are the point

US requirements are a floor, not a ceiling. Some of the most revealing tests only exist in the European framework, and most low-cost sets never go near them:

Sensory testing (DIN 10955) — does the silicone transfer taste or smell to milk and food? If your baby rejects a cup and you can't figure out why, this is sometimes why.

Per-color migration testing — each pigmented version tested separately in acidic, hot, and fatty food simulants, not just the one sample that's cheapest to submit.

Mechanical abuse testing (EN 14350 / CPSC use-and-abuse) — our training cup straw withstood a 50-newton pull (about 11 pounds of force) without detaching; our spoon passed a 10-pound bite test and ten drop impacts from 4.5 feet. Straw detachment and torn fragments are choking hazards — this is the testing that catches them before your baby does.

Hygiene testing — 50 simulated wash cycles, then a check for trapped food debris and bacterial growth. Cheap sets with deep seams and unreachable crevices fail at exactly this.

Design is the difference you feel daily

Testing is about what a product won't do to your baby. Design is about what it will do for them. Our products are shaped around developmental stages — a spoon tip soft and angled for a baby who's learning, not a shrunken adult utensil; a cup weighted and sized for hands that are still figuring out grip. Generic sets are typically molded from whatever tooling a factory already owns, sold under a dozen interchangeable brand names. When a cheap set is honestly fine

Fairness matters here: if you need a backup set for grandma's house, restaurant emergencies, or a daycare bin where things vanish weekly, an inexpensive set that passes the pinch and smell tests may serve you fine. Where we'd push back is on the daily drivers — the spoon in your baby's mouth three times a day, the cup that holds every liquid they drink, the plate under every hot meal. That's where material purity and verified testing stop being abstractions, and where the $10 difference amortizes to pennies per meal over a year of use.

The checklist

Before buying any silicone feeding product, from anyone: Does the brand name a testing standard, not just say "safe"? Will they show an actual third-party report? Does the silicone pass the pinch test? Is there a real company behind it that existed last year and will exist next year? We're glad to be held to that standard — it's the one we built the company on.
