Before solids start, feeding is milk. The gear that matters in this window is whatever keeps bottle feeds calm and comfortable, plus the small care items that make the first months easier. Nothing on this shelf needs to be introduced on a schedule, and nothing here is a milestone. It is a short list on purpose.
Do we need spoons and cups yet?
Not yet. Common pediatric guidance puts the start of solids at around six months, and that is when a first spoon and a small open cup start earning their place. Buying them early is fine, using them early is not the point. The pieces on this shelf are the ones a newborn to six month old genuinely uses.
What is worth having before the baby arrives?
A bottle and a couple of slow flow nipples if bottles are part of the plan, storage for milk, and the nail care items, because newborn nails grow fast and are the thing most new parents are nervous about. Everything else can wait until the baby is here and you know how feeding is going.
