How it works

The Olababy electric nail trimmer uses soft oscillating pads that smooth the nail edge with no exposed blade, and its motor runs quietly enough to use on a sleeping baby. An LED front light is built in for night trims, and the trimmer is USB rechargeable, so there are no batteries to hunt for.

Why parents choose it

  • Oscillating pads file the nail edge down instead of clipping it
  • Whisper-quiet motor you can use while baby sleeps
  • Six graded pads from newborn to toddler, plus an adult polish grade
  • LED front light for trimming in a dim nursery
  • Recharges from the included USB cable

Who it is for

Good fit for
  • A parent who is uneasy using clippers on a newborn. The set is one trimmer, six filing pads and a USB cable.
  • One tool across the whole range, tagged 0 to 6 months, 6 to 12 months and 12 months and up, with pad grades to match.
  • Nails filed down gradually rather than cut in one go.
Not right for
  • Taking a long toddler nail down in a single pass. A file removes material gradually.
  • A parent who wants no powered tool at all. The glass nail file 2-pack is the manual option.
  • A child who will not tolerate a powered device near their hands.

Why Olababy

Every feeding product is one material, food-grade silicone, soft enough for gums that are still teething and inert enough to go through a dishwasher for years. The panel above names what is in it and what is kept out of it.

Olababy has designed in Portland, Oregon since 2015, with parents testing the things their own children eat from.

More about this one

How do I trim a sleeping baby's nails?

Wait until your baby is settled asleep, then use the Olababy electric nail trimmer, whose motor is quiet enough for a sleeping baby. Switch on the LED front light so each nail is easy to see in a dim room, hold one finger at a time, and let the oscillating pad smooth the edge. The pad files rather than cuts, so there is no exposed blade near the finger.

Which nail trimmer pad should I use at each age?

Match the pad to your baby's nails: the Olababy trimmer's six pads are graded by age, from the finest grade for paper-thin newborn nails through to toddler nails, with an adult polish grade for parents. Start on the newborn grade and move up as nails grow thicker. Worn pads can be replaced by grade with the Olababy replacement pads.

How do I stop my baby scratching their face?

Keep your baby's nails short and smooth, which is the job the Olababy electric nail trimmer is built for. Newborn nails are paper-thin, grow fast and scratch, and the trimmer files each edge smooth rather than cutting it. Because it runs quietly and has no exposed blade, a short filing session can fit into a nap, so regular trims are easier to keep up.

What is included

1 trimmer, 6 filing pads and a USB charging cable.

How to clean it

Wipe the body clean; rinse pads under warm water.

More questions (5)

Can I use this on a newborn?

Yes, Olababy baby-care tools are designed to be gentle enough for newborns. Follow the included usage guidance for your baby’s age.

Are baby nail clippers safe for a newborn?

Newborn nails are paper-thin, and clipping that close to soft skin makes many parents nervous, which is why we file instead. Our electric baby nail trimmer smooths the nail edge with soft oscillating pads and no exposed blade, with six pads from newborn to toddler, an LED light, and a whisper-quiet motor that works on sleeping babies.

How do I trim my newborn’s nails without the drama?

File, do not cut, and time it for sleep. The tempered-glass baby nail file smooths nails with fine, even abrasion and rinses clean with warm water, while the USB-rechargeable electric trimmer has an LED front light for night trims. Either way, no blades near tiny fingers.

What if it does not work for us?

Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery (see our return policy for details). US shipping is free on orders over $49.
